History:
The Beginning
by: David Harris
The Park City Speedskating Club started unofficially by enlisting interested skaters at the Park City Ice Arena during the February, 2006 Torino Olympics, which also was the opening of the Park City Ice Arena. Shortly after that we evolved into a Speedskating Club and was admitted to US Speedskating (USS). We then became member of the Wasatch Speed Skating Association.
Our biggest accomplishment was to be selected to become a member of Youth Winter Sports Alliance (YWSA) (http://ywsa.org As a members of YWSA were able to raise funds through their main fund raiser, Jans Winter Welcome auction, raffles and other venues to purchase speedskates, ice time, racing blocks and other equipment. Summit County provided funds through the RAP (Recreation, Arts and Park) Tax to enable the Park City Ice Arena to purchase safety mats for our speedskating club.
At our start, we were part of the Park City Ice Arena's Learn to Skate Program. We did hire our own instructors and each skater paid a registration fee to the ice arena.
In 2007 we became independent of the ice arena, having raising funds of over $17,000 through YWSA . This allowed us to purchase ice time from the arena and charge each skater for each six week session.
